ABSTRACT
We live in an era of renewed urban concentration and urban density via high-rise structures remains a primary agenda. However, it is crucial to understand the societal forces that drive concentration in centres: the insatiable communication requirements of our Post-fordist Network Society. In contrast to the prior era of Fordism/Modernism, this implies that urban intensification is not only a matter of density, but crucially also a matter of mixity and communicative intensification. Current agglomeration economies are much more economies of scope and communicative interaction rather than economies of scale and logistics. This has momentous consequences for the high rise typologies that are called for.
