International Summer School

THE CITY AND THE WATER

Architecture, arts and design for the valorisation of the Massaciuccoli lake in Tuscany

Massaciuccoli | August 24th – September 3rd 2017

ORGANIZERS

  • University of Pisa | DESTeC | Master Degree in Architecture and Building Engineering
  • CAV | Visual Art Centre | Pietrasanta | Italy
  • Città Infinite Association | Lucca | Italy

The International Summer School starts from the awareness of the value of the Massaciuccoli Lake (Massarosa, Lucca) and its territory. As main element of characterization and unification of the micro-sites along its coasts, the Massaciuccoli Lake is the central theme of the International Summer School – 2017 Edition.

The aim is to redesign the natural, archaeological and anthropic contexts, neighbouring with a still partially untouched natural environment. Through a systemic vision, that takes into account environmental, physical, historical, cultural and socio-economic aspects, students will develop five main themes:

  • the marina, the new Lipu headquarters (currently housing a museum) and the lake nature trails with the design of new bird watching sights;
  • the connection and redevelopment of the areas of the Roman Villa of Venulei;
  • the Niquila stone quarries;
  • the San Rocchino industrial area;
  • the tourist marina near Villa Ginori.

The results, in addition to re-appropriation and safeguarding of the natural environment, will be related to the generation of new economic, touristic and manufacturing opportunities, linked to the landscape and to the surrounding territories.

The final products of the International Summer School will stimulate new possibilities for the inhabitants of the territory and, above all, of the small town of Massaciuccoli, for the small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the territory, as well as for the local institutions, in terms of contribution to improve the awareness of their own potential and wealth.

The ideas and drawings elaborated during the International Summer School will be exposed in a public exhibition.

International Winter School

THE CITY AND THE WATER

ARCHITECTURE, ARTS AND DESIGN FOR THE VALORIZATION OF THE ARNO RIVER FRONT IN PISA

JANUARY 30th – FEBRUARY 10th 2017

Organizer

  • University of Pisa | DESTeC | Master Degree in Architectural Engineering

The city of Pisa represents one of the most important historical cities in Tuscany. As for all the river towns, Pisa owes much to its river, the Arno. It owes its strategic position between the sea, lagoons and rivers that characterized its origins, making the site particularly favourable to settlements and protected moorings. To the river and its delta, the city owes his success both as one of the most important port of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea in the Roman period, and as a Maritime Republic in the Middle Age.

Nowadays, the historical relationship of the city with its river seems to be compromised. If up the 19th century, the river represented one of the main arteries of the city, where several social and productive activities were carried out, currently for hydraulic regimentation and protection reasons, the riverbed is enclosed within walls, which de facto constitute an insurmountable physical and perceptual limit. The Winter School aims, therefore, to develop some proposals for recreating the relationship between the city and its river, focusing on:

  • the historical evolution of Pisa and its relationship to the river Arno;
  • the interactions between urban planning, landscape architecture and art;
  • the European developments in creating waterfronts as places to connect people with the water and to protect cities against flooding, using and not fighting the dynamics of the water.

Students, divided in working teams, will be asked to develop ideas along the Arno River under the educational and artistic guidance of Andre Dekker, senior artist of Observatorium, Rotterdam (www.observatorium.org) and artistic director of the Winter School. The methodological approach of Observatorium inspires students to draw from their own personal imagination, to use site visits and talks with local people as a basic source of knowledge and to design punctual architectural and site specific artworks, showcasing the issues at stake and telling the story of the site, instead of drawing masterplans and giving answers.

Target

The Winter School is addressed to students in Architecture, Urban planning, Design, Building engineering, Art Schools and also to young professionals and artists from all EU and non-EU countries.
Students in Architecture, Urban planning, Building engineering are required to have completed at least one exam both in the fields of urban planning and architectural design/composition.

International Workshop - Summer School

THE CITY AND THE WATER

Architecture, arts and self-construction experiences: the regeneration of the “Due Laghi” artisan area in Pietrasanta

September 7th - 20th 2015

Organizers

  • University of Pisa | DESTeC | Master Degree Course in Building Engineering and Architecture
  • CAV | Visual Arts Center | Pietrasanta | Italy
  • Municipality of Pietrasanta | Città d’Arte, Città Nobile dal 1841 | Italy

IN COLLABORATION WITH

  • 2 Luoghi
  • Livegreen Blog
  • Verd&Agricoltura Studio Associato
  • AgraRio by Riccardo Rio

The workshop will involve students and young professionals working together on the Versilia area, for two weeks-full immersion teamwork. Special attention will be set to public spaces, where the shared collective values of the urbs had formed. Those spaces actually show a deep formal and substantial crisis of identity: the focal point of this workshop will be the regeneration of the area, breaking through the traditional models.

The case study is an artisan area called “Due Laghi”: a context with a high environmental value and a great economic potential, but actually mined by strong fragilities.
The workshop will start from the comprehension of the historical evolution of this area; with the help of an international teaching staff, it will aim to define scenery of changes according to different scales, from the territorial to the architectural one.

The methodology that will be applied provides the experimentation of the most innovative tools and the collaboration between the international guests and the local subjects: university, administrations, professionals, associations, enterprises, and particularly artists and artisans. In the first week it will be developed the regeneration project; in the second week, students will be involved in a self-construction experience on the project area, in collaboration with the artists and artisans of the “2 Luoghi” group.
The workshop will include public meetings, important moments of exchange within participants, citizens, professionals and local public administrations.

The objectiveof the workshop is to develop hypothesis for the urban regeneration of the spaces through architecture, arts and self-construction in order to support their re-appropriation from a physical, social and economic point of view.

The final results of the workshop will be showed in a public exhibition at the end of the workshop, in Sant’Agostino cloister, in Pietrasanta, as well in the “Due Laghi” area, where it will be possible to see the self-construction products.

International Summer School

THE CITY AND THE WATER

Michelangelo and the historical Versilia: land intervention

July 25th – August 3rd 2016

Organizers

  • University of Pisa | DESTeC | Master Degree in Architectural Engineering
  • Fondazione Terre Medicee | Seravezza | Italy
  • CAV | Visual Arts Center | Pietrasanta | Italy

"The Versilia Summer School will involve students and young professionals working together on the Versilia area, from the mountains to the sea, for a ten-days full immersion teamwork. Special attention will be paid to public spaces along the river Versilia where the shared collective values of the urbs had formed.
The river Versilia was the place to settle: it provided access to marble, water for drinking, irrigating and stone cutting, but now it has disappeared from daily life, due to dikes, traffic, dangers of flooding and the large industrial plots.
Nevertheless, the water is clean, it's color is a delight for the eye, it's natural setting is bewildering and the history of the valley is remarkable: it provided marble for the Renaissance art and architecture and was explored by Michelangelo.

The workshop in Seravezza is about the paradoxes of 1) access to the river and safety, 2) recreation and nature protection, 3) bathing culture and industrial landscape.
How can we create awareness of the river as a place for comfort and reconciliation? How could the river tie the very different landscapes of marble alps, agricultural hills, small towns, large industries and sprawl together?
How can Fiume Versilia be loved again?
How would artist and architect Michelangelo respond to our needs and knowlegde, capital and politics, tools and cars?

For this we will study the present situation of solutions and dilemmas, research interactions of geology, villages and river banks and design gardens, artworks, small architectures and infrastructure for good health, bathing, recreation and meeting. The findings, ideas and designs will be presented at an exhibition in Palazzo Mediceo, Seravezza.

Of course, we want to design Observatorium style: works of imagination and magic added to places with potential for wonder, highly accessible and inviting, symbolic for the present culture of the site and multifunctional, celebrating generosity and creating an awareness for man's cultivation of the wilderness."

The workshop will see students and young professionals working together on the Versilia area, for a ten days-full immersion team work. Particular attention will be set to the public space, where the shared collective values of the urbs had formed. That spaces show actually a deep formal and substantial crisis of identity, to which we are called to give answers going over the traditional models.

The case study selected is the waterfront of Marina di Pietrasanta: a context with a high environmental value and a great economic potential, but actually mined by a strong social fragility.
The workshop will start from the comprehension of the historical evolution of the territory. Thanks to the several international experiences of the teaching staff, the workshop aims to define a scenery of change according to different scales, from the territorial to the architectural one.

The methodology that will be applied provides the experimentation of the most innovative tools and the collaboration between the international guests and the local subjects: university, administrations, professionals, associations, enterprises, artists, and artisans.

The workshop will include two public meetings, important moments of exchange within participants, citizens, professionals, and local public administrations.

The objective of the workshop is to think up hypothesis for the urban regeneration of the public spaces through architecture, design and arts – as in a sort of renewed Bauhaus – in order to support their re-appropriation from a physical, social and economic point of view.

The final results of the workshop will be showed in a public exhibition, opened in San Agostino cloister from September 14th to 21th.
